ἐπὶ Φαινίππου, Γεραστίου νουμηνία,Θεύδοτος Μενητίδα εἶπεν· v ἐπειδὴ̣Θευγένης Ἑρμογένου ἀποσταλεὶ[ς]δικασταγωγὸς ποτὶ Ζμυρναίος οἰ–κείος εὖντας καὶ εὔνους καὶ φίλουςτοῦ δάμου ἐπελθὼν παρ᾿ αὐτοῖς ἐπίτε τὰν βουλὰν καὶ τὰν ἐκκλησίαν καὶποιησάμενος τὸς κατὰ μέρος λόγ[ος]μετὰ πάσας φιλοτιμίας καὶ ἐκτενε[ίας]παρεστάσατο δόμεν τᾶι πόλει δι[κασ]–τὰς δύο καὶ γραμματῆ ἄνδρας καλοὺςκαὶ ἀγαθοὺς καὶ πιστευομένους παρ᾿ αὐ–τοῖς, τάν τε παρεπιδαμίαν ἐποιήσα{ν}τοἀξίαν ἀμφοτερᾶν τᾶν πολίων, ὑπὲρὧν ἁπάντων διαμεμαρτυρήκαντι Ζμυρ–ναῖοι διὰ τᾶς δοθείσας αὐτῶι ἀποκρίσι–ος, παραλαβών τε τὸς ἄνδρας καὶ παρα–γενόμενος ἐς τὰν πόλιν πᾶσαν κακοπα̣–θίαν καὶ ἐπιμέλειαν πεποίηται ποτικαρτε–ρήσας καὶ τᾶι δικαστοφυλακίαι ἐκτενῶςκαὶ δικαίως ἀκολούθως τῶι ὅρκωι, ἕως οὗδιεξάχθη τά τε δαμόσια καὶ ἰδιωτικὰσυμβόλαια, διαφυλάξας ἴσως καὶ δικαίωςκαὶ μισοπονήρως πᾶσι τὰν ἐνχειρισθεῖσαναὐτῶι πίστιν ὑπὸ τοῦ σύμπαντος δάμου,δαπάνας τε ποταναδέδεκται ἐκ τῶν ἰδί–ων ἔς τε τὰν παρουσίαν αὐτῶν καὶ ἐν ταῖς δα–μοτελέσι ἑορταῖς ἀποστολὰς ποιούμενοςκατὰ τοὺς ἁρμόζοντας καιροὺς ἕνεκεντοῦ κοινᾶι συμφέροντος· ὅπως οὖν καὶ ὁ δᾶ–μος εὐχαρίστως ἀπαντῶν φαίνηται τοῖς ἀγα–θοῖς τῶν ἀνδρῶν τοί τε ἄλλοι θεωρεῦντεςτὰν εὐχαρι<σ>τίαν τοῦ πλήθευς πολὺ προθυμό–τερον ἐπιδιδῶντι ἑαυτοὺς εἰς πάντα τὰ συν–φέροντα τᾶι πόλει, ἀγαθᾶι τύχαι, δεδόχθαι τᾶιἐκκλησίαι· ἐπαινῆσθαι Θευγένην Ἑρμογένου κα[ὶ]στεφανῶσαι αὐτὸν χρυσέωι στεφάνωι ἐ̣π̣ὶ̣ τῶι ἐ–ξαποσταλέντα δικασταγωγὸν διαφυλάξαι πᾶ–σιν ἴσως τὰν δοθεῖσαν αὐτῶι πίστ[ιν] ὑπὸ τοῦ δά–μου· ἀναγορευσάτω δὲ καὶ ὁ ἱεροκᾶρυξ [τὸ]ν στ[έ]φα–νον Διονυσίων τῶι πράτωι ἀγῶνι με[τὰ τ]ὰς σπον–δάς, τᾶς δὲ ἀναγορεύσιος ἐπιμεληθέντω το[ί τε]προστάται καὶ ὁ ἀγωνοθέτας, ἐξῆ[με]ν δὲ αὐτῶ[ι]τόδε τὸ ψάφισμα ἀναγράψαντι ἐστάλαν λιθίνανἀναθέμεν ἐν τῶι ἱερῶι τοῦ Ἀσκλαπιοῦ. ἔδοξε τ[ᾶι]βουλᾶι καὶ τῶι δάμωι, γνώ{ι}μα προστατᾶν· χρῆσθαιτᾷ Θευδότου ἐφόδωι. ψᾶφοι στερεαὶ ἐ̣π̣ιδιδοῦσα[ι]τὸν στέφανον ωπε´ vac. τετρυπαμένα [οὐδεμί]α̣.

Unter (dem monarchos) Phainippos, im Gerastios, am ersten;Theudotos S. d. Menetidas stellte den Antrag: DaTheugenes S. d. Hermogenes, entsandtals Richterwerber zu den Smyrnäern, dievertraut sind und wohlgesonnen und befreundetunserem Volk, bei ihnen vor demRat und der Volksversammlung auftrat undin einer Rede über die einzelnen Punktemit allem Eifer und Beharrlichkeitdarauf drang, dass der Stadt zweiRichter und ein Sekretär gegeben würden, und zwar trefflicheund bei ihnen Vertrauen genießende Männer;und er seinen Aufenthalt in einer Weise gestaltete,die beider Städte würdig war, wovonvon allem die Smyrnäer Zeugnis abgelegt habenin der ihm übergebenen Antwort;und er die Männer empfing und nach ihrerAnkunft in unserer Stadt alle Müheund Fürsorge aufwandte, indem er sichauch der Richterbetreuung beharrlichund gerecht annahm gemäß seinem Eid, bis dieöffentlichen und privaten Rechtsfälleerledigt waren; er dabei unparteiisch und gerechtund allen gegenüber integer das ihm vomgesamten Volk übertragen Vertrauen bewahrte,zusätzlich Gelder aufwandte aus eigenenMitteln für den Aufenthalt der Richter und ihnen beiden öffentlichen Festen Geschenke machtezum jeweils geeigneten Zeitpunkt im allgemeinenInteresse; und damit nun auch das Volk insichtbarer Weise den trefflichen Männernmit Dankbarkeit begegnet, und die anderen, indemsie die Dankbarkeit der Bevölkerung sehen, sich noch vielbereitwilliger für die Interessen der Stadthergeben, zu Glück und Heil!, so wolle die Volksversammlungbeschließen: dass man belobige Theugenes S.d. Hermogenes undihn bekränze mit goldenem Kranz, da er, abgesandtals Richterwerber, allen gegenüber in gleicher Weise dasihm vom Volk gegebene Vertrauen bewahrt hat;es soll auch der Festherold den Kranz verkündenbei den Dionysien am ersten Wettkampf nach denTrankopfern; für die Verkündung sollen sorgendie Vorsteher und der Veranstalter der Spiele; es sei ihm gestattet,diesen Beschluss aufzuzeichnen auf eine steinerne Steleund zu weihen in dem Heiligtum des Asklepios. - Beschluss vonRat und Volk, nach Vorlage der Vorsteher: dass man den Vortragdes Theudotos übernehme. Under Phainippos, the first of Gerastios;Theudotos son of Menetidas proposed: inasmuch asTheugenes son of Hermogenes, sent asjudge-escort to the Smyrnaeans, who areintimates and well-disposed and friendsof the people, coming among them tothe council and assembly andmaking a detailed speechwith all zeal and earnestness,urged them to give the city twojudges and a secretary, men goodand honorable and trusted among them;and the rest of his visit he conductedin a manner worthy of both cities; aboutall of which the Smyrnaeans have testifiedthrough the answer given to him;and having gathered the men and cometo the city he has exerted every effortand care, persist-ing in his guardianship of the judges strenuouslyand justly, in keeping with his oath, up to the daythe public and private cases were settled,preserving fairly and justlyand righteously toward all the trustinvested in him by the entire people,and he took up the costs at his own ex-pense for their residence and at thepublic festivals, making the payoutsalways at the appropriate times for the sakeof the common advantage; and therefore, so that thepeople be manifest as dealing graciously withgood men, and that others, seeingthe gratitude of the populace far more eagerlydevote themselves to all that is ad-vantageous to the city, for good fortune, it is decreed bythe assembly: to praise Theugenes son of Hermogenes andcrown him with a gold crown because,sent as judge-escort, he preserved forall alike the trust given him by the people;and the sacred herald is to proclaim the crownat the next contest of the Dionysia after the libations, andthe prostatai and the agonothete are to see to theproclamation; he is permittedto inscribe this decree on a stone steleand erect it in the temple of Asklepios.
